How to Choose an Inground Swimming Pool: Location, Size and Material [Part 1]

Choosing the most suitable material is one of the most important decisions when getting your inground pool. It affects everything — how long does building the pool take, at what cost, its appearance as well as its lifespan.

Here, you’ll find everything you need to explore the world of in-ground outdoor pools. To choose the best garden pool, you must consider 8 key aspects.

In this part of the guide, we’ll introduce the first 3.

1. Pool Location

You probably already have in mind the right spot for your new swimming pool. But is it really the best place? Answer the questions below to find the perfect pool location.

Is the Pool Close Enough to Your House?

You don’t want to hide the swimming pool in the back of your garden. No one will spot it straight away, and it might take a while to get to the pool. For easy access, our customers prefer locating their pool close to the terrace.

Does the Pool Fit Your House Visually?

Appearance is important, you will be looking at your pool for the rest of your life. If you’re not sure where your pool would look the best, get in touch with an architect — they will recommend the best solution or even come up with visualisations of the pool of your choice in your garden.

Is the Pool in the Sun?

Choose a place with enough sunshine. This makes swimming more enjoyable and the sun warms up the pool water for free.

Is the Pool Away from Trees?

If possible, keep the pool away from all trees in the garden. They provide unnecessary shade, and their leaves or needles might fall directly into the water (or onto the roofing).

Is There Enough Space Left for Pool Technology?

Think not only of swimming but also the location of… water filter, water pump and other pool technology. These devices are usually stored in an underground shaft, your garden house, garage or a utility room.

Whichever option you choose, all technology should be near the pool.

Pool water flows through pool pipes to the filter — where it gets cleaned and then returns to the pool. The further away from the pool the technology is, the more modifications to the garden. And more material, which makes the entire construction more costly.

Pool technology is powered by electricity, so locating your pool close to the shaft makes even more sense.

Your pool must be connected to the drain — to drain the water after the season. Access to the drain is also needed to get rid of dirty water after cleaning the sand filter (this is usually done once a month). Dirty pool water can’t go anywhere else than the drain (e.g., watering plants) as it contains chemicals or salt.

2. Pool Size

What is the purpose of your pool? Choose a pool size based on your plans for it.

A Pool for Children and to Relax

Are you getting the pool for your children to splash around and for yourself to relax next to  it? A small pool up to 7.4 metres is perfect — take a look at our small pools.

If your space is limited, take a look at our smallest pool, the X-Trainer 110, 11 metres in length.

A Sports Pool

Are you a swimmer and plan on increasing your fitness level? Your pool should be at least 10 metres long — check out the large pools (8.8-13.3 metres).

A large 11-metre pool guarantees enough space for a proper swim workout; an adult will do about six strokes in it. If you are limited in space, get a counter-current to enjoy swimming even in a smaller pool.

If you’re looking for a pool solely for swimming, check out the Fast Lane model designed for fitness swimmers. The length of 12.2 metres is perfect and the pool takes up less space as it is narrower than other models.

A Universal Swimming Pool

Our best-selling pools (7.5-8.8 m) are loved both by children and adults. These models are a good choice if you can’t decide which pool to get — their versatility meets all the needs.

A Swimming Pool with a Whirlpool

Do you want to stretch your body but also enjoy relaxing in a whirlpool from time to time? You can do both in one pool. Our Yacht Pool combines a generous swimming area with an integrated whirlpool.

Our Yacht Pool has been awarded with two prestigious awards — the Red Dot Design Award and IF Product Design Award.

3. Material

Material of a swimming pool mainly affects the pool’s:

  • Appearance
  • Lifespan
  • Price

In-ground pools are usually made of plastic, fibreglass or concrete. High-quality composite material with a ceramic coating or stainless steel is mostly used for luxury pools.

Each material has its pros and cons. We discuss these in detail in our article on materials.
